'Celebrity Rehab' Patient Mike Starr Found Dead

'Celebrity Rehab' Patient Mike Starr Found Dead

Mike Starr, a patient on last year's Celebrity Rehab and the original bassist for the band Alice in Chains, has died.

The 44-year-old rocker was found in a Salt Lake City home Tuesday afternoon, according to TMZ. His father told the website, "It's a terrible shock and tragedy."

Starr struggled with longtime addiction issues and was arrested last month on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance after police found him with six Xanax pills and six Opana (painkiller) pills, according to TMZ.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, the addiction specialist who treats the patients on VH1's Celebrity Rehab, expressed his condolences via his Twitter account. "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness," he wrote. "So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Starr's appearance on the show -- along with celebs including Tom Sizemore, Heidi Fleiss, Mackenzie Phillips, Dennis Rodman and Mindy McCready -- wasn't his first attempt at breaking free from drugs such as heroin, methadone, crystal meth, cocaine and pot, according to the show's website. In fact, he already had 30 previous stints in drug rehab facilities. He had said on the show he did not want to end up like his former band mate, Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, who died of a heroin overdose in 2002.

Starr was a talented musician, playing with the grunge band Alice in Chains from 1987 until 1993, when he was asked to leave the band by the other members.

Meanwhile, the upcoming season of Celebrity Rehab already has had its share of drama and the show won't even air until this summer. Real Housewives of D.C. star/White House party crasher Michaele Salahi was allegedly kicked off the show on Tuesday during filming because she had no signs of drug addiction, according to RadarOnline.com.
