Celebs React to Elizabeth Taylor's Death

Celebs React to Elizabeth Taylor's Death

Legendary actress and philanthropist Dame Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79. The two-time Oscar winner was famed for her lavish lifestyle, numerous husbands and love of jewels, but also for her major contributions to AIDS research and awareness.

Taylor was hospitalized last month for congestive heart failure, a condition she'd battled for several years. Her son Michael Wilding said in a statement: "My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to the world."

Fellow celebrites are mourning Taylor's loss today. "We have just lost a Hollywood giant," Elton John said in a statement. "More importantly, we have lost an incredible human being."

Taylor herself enjoyed connecting with her fans via her official Twitter page, so it's no surprise many celebrities are posting their condolences to the late star on the micro-blogging site.

Taylor is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was married seven times, and her love life was a point of fascination to the press.

The Cleopatra star was a close friend of the late Michael Jackson. She was one of the first celebrities to harness her star power into her successful lines of jewelry and perfume.

In the actress's final interview, conducted by Kim Kardashian in the March issue of Harper's Bazaar, Taylor said: "I never planned to acquire a lot of jewels or a lot of husbands. I have been supremely lucky in my life in that I have known great love, and, of course, I am the temporary custodian of some incredible and beautiful things."
