Kim Kardashian Quits Twitter and Facebook for a Cause

Kim Kardashian Quits Twitter and Facebook for a Cause

Lady Gaga is the most popular celebrity on both Twitter (7.2 million followers) and Facebook (23.9 million fans) -- meaning lots of people will be disappointed when she quits the Internet on Wednesday. Kim Kardashian and Justin Timberlake will also be leaving Twitter and Facebook. But don't worry, they have a very good excuse: they're all planning on dying.

No, this isn't an actual suicide pact; it's a symbolic one, and a very clever fund-raiser for Alicia Keys' charity, Keep a Child Alive. Keys had the idea of asking her famous friends to abandon their online accounts in honor of World AIDS Day -- in her words, a "digital death." In order to get their favorite celebrities back online -- to "buy their lives back" -- fans can make $10 text-message donations to Keys' charity. Once a celeb raises one million dollars, his or her digital life will be restored.

In addition to Gaga, Kardashian and Timberlake (all among the Top 10 most-followed tweeters), the high-profile celebrities "dying" for the cause include Katie Holmes, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Usher, Serena Williams, Elijah Wood, Jay Sean, Keys' husband Swizz Beats, Khloe Kardashian and Willow and Jaden Smith. Many of the stars will promote the cause with videos (Seacrest will post his "Last Tweet and Testament" video on Facebook on Tuesday) or photos (Kim Kardashian posed in a coffin).

Keep a Child Alive provides medication and first-class care to children with AIDS in Africa and India, as well as support for the millions of children orphaned by AIDS. You can get more information here or here. The organization is also selling T-shirts with bar codes, which will make a donation when scanned by a cell phone.

Visit Buylife.org on Wednesday to get the latest on stars' digital deaths. And remember: Only you have the power to bring Lady Gaga back to life.
