Just one day after announcing that her cancer had taken a turn for the worse, Elizabeth Edwards passed away in her Chapel Hill, N.C., home surrounded by family on December 7. The author and estranged wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards had been suffering from breast cancer since 2004. "Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence, but she remains the heart of this family," the Edwards family said in a statement. Elizabeth leaves two daughters, 28-year-old Cate and 12-year-old Emma Claire, and a son, Jack, 10. A son, Wade, died in 1996 at age 16. After her husband confessed to fathering a daughter out of wedlock, Elizabeth split from John in January 2010.
