Lady Gaga's hotly anticipated second studio album, Born This Way, won't be released until May 23, but the singer's adoring "little monsters" need not go into withdrawal; the record's first single, also entitled "Born This Way," arrived online and on the radio today -- giving fans their first taste of the star's follow-up to The Fame Monster.
So, does the song live up to all the hype? Fans have been champing at the bit to hear the single for months, and Gaga further stoked the fire with a recent Vogue interview, in which she sang her own praises to high heaven, raving about her singing voice, calling Born This Way "nothing less than the greatest album of the decade" and referring to the now-released title song as "magical."
While we can't speak to the album as a whole, Gaga was pretty much on the money with her description of the song. Listen to it below and judge for yourself!
Let's get this out of the way straight off: The song is sure to be a huge hit. No surprise there. But what may surprise you is just how familiar "Born This Way" feels -- almost as if you've heard it before. That's because it sounds a whole lot like Madonna's "Express Yourself."
Now, we're not saying that Gaga ripped off the Material Girl. On the contrary, it seems pretty clear that she's intentionally paying homage to Madge, an artist who has no doubt deeply influenced her music and her stage persona.
While the "Born This Way" lyrics are completely different, the underlying (very danceable) beats and melody evoke "Express Yourself." Meanwhile, the song's breakdown, during which Gaga raps, is reminiscent of another great Madonna tune, "Vogue."
All in all, we have to say that we dig Gaga's new song. It has completely erased any doubts we had that she is aiming to be the next Madonna, and it certainly whet our appetite for the rest of the album that is to come.
